Computerized maintenance information systems can significantly improve the efficiency of maintenance by facilitating the availability and management of information. However, they require the provision of hardware and software for use by maintenance staff where maintenance is performed, as well as at office and administrative locations. This may require special communications to make it available to diverse locations. The hardware and software need to be maintained and kept updated, and training in their use has to be provided to maintenance staff. The cost of providing and operating such a system needs to be considered against the expected benefits.
